Board of Education Rejects Charter School Application

Despite a recommendation for approval from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Monifa McKnight, the Board of Education (BOE) turned down a request for a public charter school that would have based its curriculum on business learning for middle and high school students.

BOE members expressed concern thatĀ The Mentoring Business Learning Institute would be able to enroll enough students, have adequate transportation and be able to fund the rehab of the building it had planned to use in Gaithersburg.

Board member Karla Silvestre noted that enrollment at MCPS is not as high as it has been and that the economy possibly is heading for a recession. “That is my continued concern about the financial viability of the school,” she said.

In a two-page memorandum, McKnight recommended that the BOE should approve the application so that the school would first operate in the 2024-2025 school year. Her recommendation was contingent on the charter school proving by July 1, 2023 that it had the funds to proceed.
