Twenty-four years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, local community members paid tribute Thursday to firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. At Rio in Gaithersburg, Montgomery County firefighters and other participants climbed stairs in a parking garage until they reached the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.
Three hundred forty three New York City firefighters died on Sept.11, 2001, even more have died since from related illnesses linked to the attacks.
