Montgomery, Maryland Positivity Rates Are Lowest Since Beginning of Pandemic

Montgomery County COVID-19 Statistics for May 18

The Maryland Department of Health reported 26 new COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County Tuesday morning. The county’s cumulative case count is 70,556.

As of May 9, the county reported that 75 people were hospitalized with COVID-19.

Montgomery County recorded one new coronavirus-related fatalities Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 1,490.

Monday, 1.37% of the COVID-19 tests done were positive. Compared to Sunday’s rate of 1.47%, this is a decrease of 0.1 The county’s positivity rate is lower than 21 of the 24 jurisdictions in the state. The positivity rate is the lowest since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services clinics are currently vaccinating residents age 12 and older. County residents may register for an appointment at any of the county-run clinics or the Germantown mass vaccination site online.

According to Montgomery County health officials, 46.9% of the county’s residents are fully vaccinated for COVID-19; 58.7% have received their first dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna two-dose vaccine.

Montgomery County leads the state in total COVID-19 related fatalities (1,490 deaths) but not in total cases. Prince George’s County has 1,458 fatalities and the most coronavirus cases in the state with 84,497 cases. Baltimore County has the second-highest number of fatalities with 1,475 and the third-largest number of cases with 65,040.

Somerset County on the Eastern Shore has the highest cases per capita at 100.6 cases per 1,000 residents. Allegany County in the western region of the state has the second-highest cases per capita at 98.7 cases per 1,000 residents.

Tuesday, the state recorded 212 new infections, bringing the state’s cumulative case count to 456,428.

596 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19 across the state, which is the lowest number since November of last year.

Maryland recorded 14 new coronavirus-related fatalities Tuesday bringing the death toll to 8,754.

The state reported 2.23% of the COVID-19 tests from Monday were positive. This is a decrease of 0.27 from Sunday’s rate of 2.51% and is the lowest positivity rate since the pandemic began in March of last year.

All Marylanders ages 16 and older are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine at the state’s mass vaccination sites. Appointments are available online at covidvax.maryland.gov or by calling the state’s COVID-19 vaccination support center at 1-865-MC-GOVAX. All of the state’s mass vaccination sites are accepting walkups.

According to the Maryland Department of Health, 39.296% of the state’s residents have received two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; and 3.573% have received the single-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
