Teenager shot, another detained following fight at Blake High School

A teenage boy was shot, and another detained following a fight between several people at the James Hubert Blake High School parking lot Wednesday at around 11:28 a.m., according to Montgomery County Police.

School security noticed several people involved in an altercation that “quickly escalated into a fight,” MCPD Police Chief Marc Yamada said during a short news conference following the incident.

A Montgomery County Police Department Community Engagement Officer, who was at Blake High School at the time, responded to the scene and stopped the fight, Yamada said.

The officer, as well as security personnel employed by Montgomery County Public Schools, discovered a handgun shortly after responding to the scene. The weapon reportedly fell to the ground, police said.

A 19-year-old suspect, who was not a student, was detained but has not been charged with any crimes as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. During the news conference, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Taylor called the suspect who was detained, “an unwelcome, unwanted adult.”

A short time later after the fight was broken up, the teenage victim was dropped off at White Oak Medical Center suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. While there, investigators discovered the wounded boy, age unknown, was involved in the initial fight.

Police officers secured the campus area and placed the high school in a hold status. Under that status, school hallways are kept clear while classroom activities continue.

Yamada said officers are interviewing witnesses, reviewing video and going through evidence at the parking garage where the incident took place as the investigation gets underway.

There will be a delayed school schedule for Blake students Thursday. Emotional support staff will be on hand to speak with students, said Taylor.

“I am deeply troubled by today’s shooting in the parking lot of Blake High School and am relieved to learn that the student is in stable condition,” said At-Large Councilmember Will Jawando in social media post. “My office is actively monitoring the situation and will work to ensure students, families and our community have the full transparency they deserve.”
