3 Years Later, Members of County Police Discuss Their Role in Defending the Capitol on January 6

Saturday marks the third anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

On the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) podcast, Voices of Service, two members of the MCPD talk about the department’s response to the storming of the Capitol. Sergeant Lawrence Haley and Officer Willie Taft both found themselves in the midst of an unforeseen riot as members of an elite group of County police officers known as the Special Events Response Team (SERT).

Here is a portion of the podcast — from MCPDMedia — focused on January 6.

Forty plus members of the Command Staff served as members of SERT on January 6. SERT is often called upon to support high profile events in the nation’s capital like the Inauguration and other ceremonies and occasions where large crowds are anticipated.
