Fire Chief Scott Goldstein Reflects on More Than 30 Years Serving Montgomery County

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) Chief Scott Goldstein will retire from the department after more than 30 years serving the community.

Goldstein, who was born and raised in Montgomery County, reflected on his decades with MCFRS.

Goldstein, as chief for eight years, has led MCFRS during emergencies including the Arrive Silver Spring apartments fire, a Gaithersburg plane crash into power lines, the Potomac Oaks Condominium explosion and fire and the Friendly Garden Apartments fire and explosion.

After his last day on June 30, Goldstein will head west with his family to Kelso, Washington, where he will be fire chief for Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue. He said it has been the family plan to relocate after his time with MCFRS over to Washington state, where his wife, Heidi, is from. Their two sons will also come to the nearby area.

“And with my parents having passed about five years ago, I have plenty of work family, that is very important. But my ‘family’ family — Heidi’s family — is what we’re getting back close to,” Goldstein told MyMCM.
