Local leaders are working to strengthen trust between the community and police through newly introduced legislation. Bill 45-20 Police-Community Policing-Data, would require the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) to provide data on police interactions with residents, including stops, searches, citations, and arrests.

“We can’t improve our policing, and we can’t improve our public confidence and reduce bias without better data collection and public access to that,” said Montgomery County Council President Tom Hucker during a virtual media briefing on Monday.

Hucker, along with Councilmember Will Jawando, explains why the legislation was introduced, and what will happen if it passes.
