Welcome to our Weekend Roundup of events in Montgomery County. Here are nine things to do this weekend, September 15-17.

FRIDAY, September 15

Washington Ukranian Festival: Bring your family and friends to the 20th annual Ukrainian Festival this weekend on the grounds of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Silver Spring. Enjoy Ukranian artists, dancers, crafts, children’s activities, Ukranian food and a Kozak beer garden. Admission is $20 for the entire weekend. Under 21 is free admission. St. Andrews is located at 15100 New Hampshire Ave in Silver Spring.

Cars and Cones: The Family Room in Laytonsville is more than just a local store, it is a gathering place with events planned throughout the year. Friday’s event, Cars & Cones, pairs classic cars, bikes and trucks in the community with ice cream and oldies music. Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at 6820 Olney Laytonsville Road.

Hispanic Heritage Month Display: Gaithersburg’s Multicultural Affairs Committee and the Community Museum’s exhibit celebrating Latino culture is on display at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park from now through Oct. 15.  The Activity Center is located at 506 South Frederick Avenue.

SATURDAY, September 16

Tubman Day:  Harriet Tubman emancipated herself on this day in 1849. Come out to the Button Farm in Germantown Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. to learn about Harriet Tubman through hands-on activities for all ages. Capitol Tap and District Tap will be at Button Farm to share the art of tap dance, including a tribute work to Harriet Tubman. Also, historian Anthony Cohen will discuss the Journey to Freedom Statue that was in residence at Button Farm from April 1-May 30. Cohen will share the vision behind Wesley Wofford’s bronze depiction of Tubman and the successful effort to bring the statue to Germantown, Maryland. Cohen will share images and artifacts from this inspirational community gathering.

Apple Picnic: Celebrate all things apple at Meadowside Nature Center Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. There will be a fun craft, apple tasting, games at this family event. Fee is $8. Registration is available online.

International Festival: The Hughes United Methodist Church hosts this festival Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be music, food, games, piñatas, face painting, and family fun at Westfield Wheaton mall.

SUNDAY, September 17

Children’s Day:  Bring your friends, family and picnics to Brookside Gardens for this special event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children will explore the science and art of gardening through art projects and science activities. Participants will rotate through outdoor activity stations. Event is free and registration is not necessary. The stations will move indoors in the case of inclement weather. Brookside Gardens is located at 1800 Glenallan Avenue in Wheaton.

Jamaica Fest “Link Up”: The Embassy of Jamaica hosts a festival Sunday to celebrate their vibrant art, music, food, dance, and fashion. Experience the vibrant culture of Jamaica at Veterans Plaza from noon to 9 p.m. More information and raffle tickets are available here.

Out of the Darkness Walk: The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is a voluntary organization with a mission to “save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.” The Out of the Darkness (OOTD) Community Walks give people the courage to open up about their own struggle or loss, and the platform to change our culture’s approach to mental health.  Sunday’s walk takes place at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown at 9 a.m. More information is available here.
