Montgomery County’s indoor mask mandate, set to expire on Jan. 31, has been extended until Feb. 21.

The county council, sitting as the Board of Health, voted unanimously Tuesday to extend the mandate. They also agreed to meet weekly with the county’s public health officer to determine if the mandate could safely be lifted earlier. The Council will look at the number of COVID cases per 100,000 residents, the test positivity rate, and the number of patients hospitalized with COVID each week.

As of Tuesday, the county has recorded close to 580 cases per 100,000 residents during the past seven days. The county’s transmission rate is 9.1 percent.

The updated regulation takes effect on Wednesday.

As a reminder, the Maryland State Department of Education still requires students and staff to wear face coverings in schools. And the Transportation Security Administration also requires face coverings on public transportation.
