‘Input is Needed’: MCPS Launches Virtual Academy Interest Survey

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) launched the Virtual Academy Interest Survey on Friday.

The survey will give the school district a better understanding of how many students prefer to be on the virtual learning platform next school year. Responses will help MCPS plan for the virtual academy.

“Input is needed and critical to our planning,” said MCPS Communications Department Supervisor Gboyinde Onijala during an interview with MyMCM.

Here’s what the community needs to know about the survey:

MCPS plans for a full return to in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year following county, state, and federal safety guidelines. The school system is planning to offer an entirely virtual learning option to meet the needs of certain students, including those who thrived in the virtual environment throughout this year.

The survey is not a commitment to attend the academy, and it does not guarantee enrollment in the program, according to MCPS officials.

About the Virtual Academy Program:

  • Full-time virtual learning option for students in grades PreK-12 beginning Fall 2021.
  • Students/families would be expected to commit to the virtual academy for the 2021-2022 school year.
  • Students would be enrolled in their home school and take courses with the virtual academy.
  • Students would continue to have access to meals, extracurricular, and athletics at their home school.
  • Students would receive instruction and services from staff dedicated to the virtual academy.
  • Part-time option for high school students is still undecided. This option would be paired with in-person classes at the home school or with an internship or abbreviated schedule.
