5 Things to Know Today, Nov. 18, In Montgomery County

Today is Friday, Nov. 18. Here is the 10 day forecast and 5 things to know today as we head into the weekend.

1. Gaithersburg Condo Explosion: Thursday a body was recovered from the site of Wednesday’s explosion and fire at a Gaithersburg condominium complex. Recovery efforts will continue Friday. MyMCM has been covering the tragedy since early Wednesday.

2. Hoggle Competency Hearing: Catherine Hoggle, accused of murdering her two young children in 2014, will be back in court today for a hearing to once again determine if she is competent enough to stand trial. She has been committed to the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center since 2014 receiving treatment for mental illness.

3. Game of the Week: MyMCM is covering the Wise Pumas (11-0) at Blair (9-1) football game tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the Maryland class 4A playoffs. 4. Annual Holiday Events: Brookside Garden of Lights walk-through lights display returns for its 24th year tonight and continues through Jan 1, 2023. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. Gaithersburg’s Winter Lights returns to Seneca Creek State Park this weekend with special events. While some are sold out, there are tickets available for Sunday’s S’More Lights and Monday’s Leashes ‘n Lights at this time. The drive through display opens Friday, Nov. 25. Tickets are only available online. Saturday’s Thanksgiving Parade in Silver Spring takes place starting at 10 a.m.

5. Party With a Purpose Fundraiser: Montgomery Community Media (MCM) invites you to a fundraiser and cocktail reception on Wednesday, November 30 from 6-9 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Center. The event features music, a raffle, amazing food and cocktails. Funds raised from this event will support media training and camps for low and moderate-income families. And one more thing: The Bethesda and Medical Center Red Line Metro stations will close this weekend due to switch work and other scheduled maintenance.
